About the history of the Berlin Prater

Opened in 1837 as a garden tavern just outside the city gates, the Berlin Prater has always attracted those seeking relaxation and adventure in nature. Entertainment was offered in the Prater hall and beer garden, but it was also a place of political agitation and discussion. As the city grew and changed, the Prater remained a central meeting point for the neighborhood, where people gathered to eat, drink, debate, dance, and celebrate together. Today, the Prater is under municipal management. After the renovation is completed, the Volksbühne and independent theater groups will perform in the main hall, while the Prater Galerie for contemporary art will occupy a side wing.
